How GST Is Calculated

Adding GST to a base amount:

GST Amount = Base Amount × (GST Rate ÷ 100)

Removing GST from an inclusive amount:

Base Amount = Inclusive Amount ÷ (1 + GST Rate ÷ 100)

For intra-state transactions, the GST amount is split equally between CGST and SGST. For inter-state transactions, the full GST amount is charged as IGST.

Frequently Asked Questions

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a single indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India, replacing multiple older taxes like VAT, service tax, and excise duty.

For sales within the same state, GST is split equally into CGST (collected by the central government) and SGST (collected by the state government). For sales between different states, IGST (Integrated GST) is charged instead, collected entirely by the central government and apportioned later.

To add GST: GST Amount = Original Amount × (GST Rate / 100), then Total = Original Amount + GST Amount. To remove GST from a GST-inclusive amount: Original Amount = GST-inclusive Amount ÷ (1 + GST Rate/100).

India primarily uses GST slabs of 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, depending on the category of goods or services. Essential items often attract 0% or 5%, while luxury and sin goods can attract 28% plus additional cess.

This calculator helps you quickly compute GST amounts for invoicing and pricing purposes. For actual GST return filing (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, etc.), you should use the GST portal or consult a tax professional, as filing involves additional compliance steps beyond simple calculation.

About the GST Calculator

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India's unified indirect tax system, applicable to the supply of most goods and services. Businesses need to calculate GST accurately for invoicing, pricing, and compliance — whether you're adding GST to a quoted base price or extracting the base price from a GST-inclusive amount shown on a receipt.

This Hisaab.in GST calculator supports both directions of calculation and automatically splits the tax into CGST and SGST for intra-state transactions, or shows it as IGST for inter-state transactions — exactly as it should appear on a compliant tax invoice.

Once you've worked out your GST figures, you can generate a fully compliant invoice directly using our GST Invoice Generator, or check the reverse calculation using our GST Reverse Calculator.
